The Power of the Piano: Playing Beethoven’s Piano Trio in a New Hall

Yesterday I got to play Beethoven’s Piano Trio Op. 1 No. 3 again, but this time in a different hall.

It was interesting playing the same piece somewhere completely different. The piano sounded different straight away, crisper and more powerful. Even the softer sections felt different, so I had to adjust how I played and listen more carefully to how the sound carried around the hall.

During rehearsal, we spent quite a bit of time adjusting the speed and working out how we wanted the music to move. We also started making much more eye contact with each other. It sounds like a small thing, but it made a huge difference.

By the time we performed, we were much more connected. We could see each other’s cues, react to each other and sometimes almost know where the music was going before it happened.

And probably the best part was that we had a lot of fun doing it. We played, listened, adjusted, laughed, and somehow the music became more connected along the way.

Same Beethoven. Different hall. More connection.
